Tl/sub 2/Ba/sub 2/Ca/sub 3/Cu/sub 4/O/sub 12/, a new 104. Kappa. superconductor of the family (AO)/sub 3/ (A'CuO/sub 3-y/)/sub m/

A new superconductor Tl/sub 2/Ba/sub 2/Ca/sub 3/Cu/sub 4/O/sub 12/ has been synthesized with a T/sub c/ onset at 120 {Kappa} and a zero resistance at 104 {Kappa}. The X-ray powder investigation and HREM study allow a structural model to be proposed. The tetragonal cell, with a = 3.852A and c = 42.00A, corresponds to the intergrowth of triple rocksalt type layers with quadruple oxygen deficient perovskite layers leading to the structural formulation ((T1O)/sub 2/ (BaO)) (BaCa/sub 3/Cu/sub 4/O/sub 9/). This oxide which represents the member n = 3, m = 4 of the series (AO)/sub n/(A'CuO/sub 3-y/)/sub m/, shows that T/sub c/ seems to tend towards a limit as the number of copper planes forming the perovskite layers increases.
