Mechanical behavior of silicon carbide/2014 aluminum composite. Technical report

The composite material consists of 25 vol.% of silicon carbide whiskers in 2014-T4 aluminum matrix. Specimens were taken from hot-isostatically-pressed cylindrical billets and tested at various loading conditions and strain rates. Torsion tests were carried out to determine the relationship between torque and twist angle. The Kk-value was determined by testing short-rod specimens. The tensile properties and Kk were compared with those of 2014-T4 aluminum to demonstrate the effect of silicon carbide whisker reinforcement on the properties of matrix materials.
