Fluid dynamics on sieve trays

Dye injection was satisfactory to determine the mean residence time of liquid on a sieve tray. The higher the liquid flow rate, the nearer it approaches plug flow conditions. At higher liquid rates, the mixing becomes less and the variances, both time based and dimensionless, also become less. For longer residence time, the mixing tends to a constant value. At liquid rates below about 10 gpm per ft, the correlations are likely to break down because jetting will occur. The downcomer plays a part in the total operation. However, the extent of its contribution to mass transfer was not obtained independently. Clearly, though, the downcomer increases the mean residence time significantly. The mixing in the downcomer is not as great as on the tray, yet the fairly large interfacial areas that appear in the downcomer might be a real contribution to mass transfer. Eddy diffusivity calculations reaffirm previous findings. A most interesting finding of this work is the considerable influences that hole size and free tray space have on the hydrodynamics of the tray.
