Evidence of atmospheric transport of ozone into urban areas

In late spring and continuing throughout the summer, concentrations of ozone in excess of 0.08 ppm are commonly found in rural areas of New York State. Widely separated rural sites measure similar ozone concentrations with very slight diurnal fluctuations. During episodes of high rural ozone concentrations, urban areas also experience high ozone peak concentrations, typically in the early afternoon. A transport and mixing hypothesis is made which interprets these urban ozone peak concentrations as primarily the result of the high background level of ozone and not local photochemical generation. 5 references, 1 figure.
