We report results from the first four in a series of 1.8 m-long dipoles built as part of the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) R and D program. Except for length, these models have the features of the SSC design, which is based on a two-layer costheta coil with 4 cm aperture. As compared to 17 m, the SSC design length, these 1.8 m magnets are a faster and more economical way of testing changes in field shape, the ratio of copper to superconductor, cable support at the coil center and ends, and similar variables. The two most recent magnets in this series have the design field shape and improved quench performance.
