Eleven school buses in Syracuse, NY will use a mixture of compressed natural gas (CNG) and gasoline. The engine conversions will cost about $2000 per bus and have a three-month payback. On the basis of a demonstration bus performance, officials expect CNG to cost 45 cents less than gasoline. A monitoring system will record mileage, maintenance, and reliability data for the converted and 11 control buses. (DCK)
