Determination of the boundary layer airflow from a single Doppler radar

Journal Article · · Journal of Atmospheric and Oceanic Technology; (United States)
A technique for determining the wind field by objectively identifying and tracking local echo patterns is discussed. The technique, termed TREC (Tracking Radar Echoes by Correlation), involves the cross-correlation of the echo features measured at two times a few minutes apart. In this study, the potential of using the cross-correlation technique on clear air echoes is assessed and a variety of data quality issues are discussed. The subjects sampled are echoes with low signal-to-noise ratios concentrated near the surface. The nature of this phenomenon dictates that ground clutter and noisy data will be matters for concern. Methods for dealing with these issues are presented. Examples are presented which demonstrate that the technique can derive the boundary layer airflow over the areas 100-150 km on a side and for time periods of several hours. 30 refs.
