Chemical characteristics of Ontario Lakes as related to glacial history

Regional studies of water chemistry have become increasingly popular as a means of estimating the potential productivity of lakes. Where time, personnel, or funds are limited, intensive limnological or fisheries surveys are impractical. The potential productivity of a lake may by determined, however, from an index of water chemistry obtained from minimal sampling. Management plans may then be implemented on the basis of this knowledge until more intensive surveys are feasible. However, in utilizing this simple method, the extreme complexity of the edaphic, morphometric, and climatic factors affecting the productivity of a lake must be recognized. The present investigation records variations of total dissolved solids and total alkalinity in Ontario lakes and examines the relationship between these parameters and the glacial history of the region. There are three principal glacial regions in Ontario. The Precambrian shield region, the region of extinct Pleistocene lakes, and the region of past marine submergence. Knowledge of the relationship between concentrations of total dissolved solids and total alkalinity and these three glacial regions allows more accurate predictions of biological productivity in lakes.
