Three-dimensional transonic flow through a lightly loaded compressor rotor is analyzed using the method of matched asymptotic expansions. The velocity field as seen by a blade-fixed observer can be represented as a sum of an undisturbed relative velocity (which is a function of the local radius) and a perturbation that can be expressed in terms of a velocity potential to the order of approximation considered here. Analytical solutions for the velocity components of a particular class of transonic flow are derived except for thin inner regions enclosing the leading and trailing edges of the blades, where numerical methods are employed to solve the simplified governing equations obtained from the asymptotic analysis. Pressure coefficients and contours of constant Mach number are presented for the numerical examples considered in the analysis.
