Petroleum developments in southwest Pacific region during 1967
In Australia, the Barrow oil field in W. Australia began production in April with its first shipment of oil, and by year end production was more than 25,000 bpd. Of the 272 wells drilled in Australia, 184 were completed as oil, gas, or combination wells. There were 3 discovery oil wells, one discovery oil and gas well, 4 discovery gas wells, and 176 development wells. Offshore, 10 wells were completed and 4 were drilling at year end. The total drilled in 1967 was approximately 1,040,000 ft compared with 750,000 ft in 1966. Exploration activities in New Zealand centered around airborne- and marine-geophysical work in the large offshore licenses granted under the new Continental Shelf Act. One dry hole, about 30 miles south of Gisborne, was abandoned at 12,000 ft after having drilled through a thick section of Upper Cretaceous rocks. Important concession changes and regrouping of interest occurred during the year. The most important step probably was the final government agreement for production and sale of the Kapuni gas-condensate, which was discovered in 1959.
