Effect of ionizing radiation on plant growth

The effects of high doses of radiation on plants is lethal, although different species of plants vary greatly in their sensitivity to ionizing radiation. There are reports, however, of a stimulating effect on growth when seeds or seedlings are exposed to light doses of ionizing radiation. Results of experiments conducted by the authors indicate that irradiation of seeds of various plants with 3000 r or X rays seemed to stimulate the growth of lettuce and cabbage, but more critical tests showed no significant effect of the irradiation. Irradiation of Gladiolus bulbs with 4000 r of X rays did results in significantly earlier flowering. 17 references, 2 tables.
