Improved combustion hardware, based upon the simultaneous optimization of oil atomizer and flame stabilizer technologies, has been retrofitted to oil and gas fired boilers to reduce NO{sub x} emissions, particulate matter emissions, and opacity, and to provide operational and performance benefits. This technology, known as REACH, can be applied to wall and tangential-fired boilers at a fraction of the cost of installing new burners. In combination with conventional NO{sub x} controls such as overfire air, flue gas recirculation, and low-NO{sub x} burners, REACH technology can provide an additional increment in NO{sub x} reduction; often valuable for meeting and maintaining regulatory compliance. This paper describes the results achieved when this technology was applied to the boilers at Orange and Rockland Utilities` Bowline Point Station to meet NYSDEC part 227 regulations for the emissions of nitrogen oxides (NO{sub x}). Bowline Point Unit 1 is a 600 MWe tangentially fired boiler with no installed NO{sub x} control systems. Bowline Point No. 2 is a 600 MW opposed-wall fired boiler with overfire air and windbox flue gas recirculation capability.
