The authors found recently that oxidation of anthracite with nitric acid under drastic conditions (180/sup 0/C) is catalyzed by strong acids like H/sub 2/SO/sub 4/, HSO/sub 3/Cl, or CH/sub 3/SO/sub 3/H. It can be suggested that, in addition to the well-known oxidation path of mellitic acid (MA) precursor creation, condensation processes play an important (for poorly metamorphosed coals perhaps even a dominant) part in a strong acidic-catalytic system. They obtained two independent proofs of this hypothesis. First, it was found that under the acidic-catalytic oxidecomposition conditions the MA yield from coals (through condensation processes) is much higher than that in two-stage oxidation under mild conditions, the effect being greater, the lower the carbon content in the coal. Second, under the conditions of the single-stage acidic-catalytic process MA is produced from poorly condensed aromatic compounds like anthracene and even from substances containing no aromatic or hydroaromatic fragments, e.g., from cellulose, glycerin, and ethylene glycol.
