Heteroepitaxial metal films grown on close packed metal surfaces exhibit a wide range of structures due to the different bond lengths of the substrate and overlayer metals. The strain associated with this mismatch of lattice constants can be accomodated by periodic dislocation structures in the metal film. These structures have been modeled using a Frenkel-Kontorova model with simple pair potentials for the interactions between metal atoms. These models predict rapid diffusion of monomers, dimers, trimers, and quadrimers on close packed surfaces. They also predict rapid diffusion of larger islands having {open_quotes}magic sizes{close_quotes}. Finally they provide excellent models of scanning tunneling microscope images of copper films on the Ru(0001) surface.
