A hearing on the environmental implications of ozone layer depletion brought testimony from the Department of Commerce, Space and Climate Research personnel, and environmental groups and agencies. The area of most concern is the threat that's posed to our health by the ongoing chemical destruction of ozone. The witnesses provided the most scientific consensus on transglobal ozone monitoring and ozone depletion over the Antarctic. Assessments were made on the following: whether Federal research programs are yielding timely answers to policy makers to guide them in their public policy decision-making; whether Federal research coordination is adequate; whether the Federal Government should be more involved in developing chlorofluorocarbons; and whether the US is playing an appropriate role in the international research program.
