Petroleum geology of Trinidad and Tobago

The offshore area north of Trinidad and west of Tobago - an interarc basin - has the potential of becoming a gas-producing province. Of 12 wells drilled, two tested commercial quantities of nonassociated gas and another tested 37.5 million CF/day. A sovereignty-rights dispute, however, is delaying further development. Geologists consider the basin a high-risk area due to the lack of information about its stratigraphic objectives and the size of its fields. A recent 12,625-ft test well in the offshore Samaan field exhibited a three-zone combined flow rate of 5 million CF/day of natural gas, 509 bbl/day of condensate, and 2074 bbl/day of oil from Pliocene sands.
