High resolution chambers - the US program
Recent experiments to measure charmed particle lifetimes are reviewed. The preliminary results of these experiments agree on a D/sup + -/ lifetime of 7.6/sub -1.5//sup +3.6/ x 10/sup -13/sec. The D/sup 0/ lifetime remains uncertain: the world average is 2.7/sub -0.4//sup +0.8/ x 10/sup -13/sec, but excluding at least two apparently good D/sup 0/ with long flight times and excluding also some early emulsion experiments with apparent bias against long D/sup 0/ flight times. Preliminary average lifetimes are 2.3/sub -0.7//sup +1.1/ x 10/sup -13/sec for ..lambda../sub c//sup +/ and 1.8/sub -0.6//sup +1.2/ x 10/sup -13/sec for F/sup + -/. Some developments under way to further improve vertex detectors are discussed.
