Analytical expressions for calculating fractional flow of water

In making waterflooding or fluid displacement calculations, a knowledge is required of the relative permeability between the displaced phases and the displacing phase. This is required in making Buckley-Leverett frontal displacement calculations in which water displaces the oil with slippage, sometimes referred to as the leaky-piston concept. Since the water saturation behind the front will likely be of the order of 80% and perhaps 20% in front of the oil bank, it is desirable that a relative permeability equation is used which will show the relative permeability as a function of water saturation covering a fairly broad water range. Certain analytical expressions have been found to be very effective for this purpose. A discussion of the straight-line semi-log plot, the derivative fractional flow, and the Corey equation are given.
