Welding of TZM molybdenum alloy
Molybdenum and TZM alloy are not too difficult to form or weld if the proper procedures are employed. Consistently good welds can be obtained by controlling the area of heating by ensuring full penetration of the welded pieces and by reducing the stresses. A large percentage of the problems incurred in welding TZM can be corrected by good weld joint design, the prewelding cycle, the welding cycle itself, and the post-welding cycle. Only sheet made from arc-cast material should be welded if one wants assurance of porosity-free results. Automatic equipment should be used when possible to eliminate interruptions during welding which cause stresses which could result in weld cracking. To distribute the stresses, it is a good practice to stress relieve at 1650/sup 0/F for one hour directly after welding. If the assembly can be removed from the dry box while still hot and put into a stress-relieving furnace, it will usually insure the probability of a sound weld. Pure TZM filler rod is usually used. One can also use Mo/50 Re alloy.
