A process is described for the separation and recovery of CO/sub 2/ from an enhanced oil recovery or naturally occurring gas stream containing a mixture of at least 45 mol % CO/sub 2/ and less than 0.2 mol % H/sub 2/S with light hydrocarbons containing ethane as a primary light hydrocarbon component. The process consists of: (a) providing a gas stream of the mixture at a pressure of at least 500 psia, (b) introducing the gas stream into the lower portion of an absorption system, (c) introducing a first liquid water phase containing at least 65 mol % water and containing less than about 1.4 weight % CO/sub 2/ into the top portion of the absorption system and a second liquid water phase containing at least 65 mol % water and containing between about 1.4 and 3.0 weight % CO/sub 2/ into the middle portion of the absorption system to form a downwardly flowing liquid water phase whereby the gas stream flows upwardly in contact with the downwardly flowing liquid water phase and the downwardly flowing liquid water phase absorbs CO/sub 2/ from the gas stream to form a CO/sub 2/-rich liquid water phase, (d) withdrawing the gas stream depleted in CO/sub 2/ from the top portion of the absorption system, (e) withdrawing the CO/sub 2/-rich liquid water phase from the bottom portion of the absorption system at a pressure of at least 500 psia, (f) separating gaseous CO/sub 2/ from the withdrawn CO/sub 2/-rich liquid water phase to form the recovered CO/sub 2/ and the first liquid water phase containing less than 1.4 mol % CO/sub 2/ and the second liquid water phase containing between about 1.4 and 3.0 weight % CO/sub 2/, and (g) recycling the separated first and second liquid water phases to the top and middle portions of the absorption system respectively.
