We have examined crown ether compounds at aqueous/organic interfaces using interface-selective second harmonic generation (SHG) and sum frequency generation (SFG) measurements. These surface nonlinear spectroscopies yield information about the population, structure and average orientation of the crown ether compounds at the interface. The data we obtain allow us to begin to construct an accurate molecular-level description of the solvent extraction process.
