Angular distributions of the /sup 40/Ca(/sup 11/B,/sup 12/C)/sup 39/K, /sup 40/Ca(/sup 10/B,/sup 11/C)/sup 39/K, and /sup 40/Ca(/sup 14/C,/sup 15/N)/sup 39/K single proton pickup reactions have been measured at beam energies of 32, 31, and 40 MeV, respectively. The (/sup 11/B, /sup 12/C) reaction has also been measured at 68 MeV. Angular distributions have been measured for transitions to the /sup 39/K ground state have also been measured for all but the 32 MeV (/sup 11/B,/sup 12/C) reaction. Elastic scattering data has been taken at each of these energies for use in determination of optical model potential parameters. These optical model potentials have then been used to calculate the transfer reaction angular distributions using the Distorted Wave Born Approximation (DWBA). The success of the DWBA in describing each of these reactions as well as the anomalous /sup 40/Ca(/sup 13/C,/sup 14/N)/sup 39/K reaction is discussed. The design and construction of a new ''hybrid'' detector is also discussed. This detector allows measurement of the total energy, energy loss, point of intersection with the focal plane, and the angle of incidence over a large portion of the focal plane. All of these parameters are measured in a single detector volume with no additional windows to degrade resolution. 52 refs., 43 figs.
