Membrane separation of hydrocarbons
Patent

OSTI ID:5598552
A process is described for the separation of a deasphalted crude oil and a light hydrocarbon solvent from a mixture thereof comprising passing the mixture across a polysulfone membrane at separation conditions whereby the light hydrocarbon solvent is recovered as the permeate and the deasphalted crude oil is recovered as the retentate. The membrane is prepared by a process wherein the polysulfone polymer is initially contacted in the form of a solution with a sulfonation agent under conditions suitable to achieve a degree of sulfonation of the polysulfone of from about 15 to about 50 percent, with the polysulfone subsequently being solution cast to form the membrane.
