Big hole measurement while drilling
Studies of the drilling performance of the CALVERT 27 drilling rig, located at the Nevada Test Site (NTS), comparing the old four (4) inch mudline and three and one half (3-1/2) inch rotary hose to the new six (6) inch mudline and five (5) inch rotary hose found that operating costs and operating air and mudpump pressures had decreased. Coincidental increases in mud flow rate and rate of penetration (ROP) had also been found. The greater ROP was attributed to better cleaning beneath the bit due to higher mud flow rates. It is not known why the mud flow rate increased. REECo has proposed that a Measurement While Drilling (MWD) System be acquired to research the dual string reverse air lift fluid system used to drill the large diameter holes at the NTS. A better understanding of the fluid system should lead to better control and eventually more consistent and lower cost drilling. A Hewlett Packard based MWD is being assembled.
