This paper reports on a study of the relationship between increasing the minimum outside air ventilation and the impacts upon energy use and indoor air quality (IAQ) conducted by the City of Columbus, Ohio, under the sponsorship of the Urban Consortium Energy Task Force (UCETF). Energy simulations of increased ventilation provided insights into the importance of economizer operation and maintenance for IAQ. The Columbus methodology involved prototypical energy simulations of increased minimum outside air ventilation as part of a broader project. The project, focused on a case study high-rise office building in Columbus, Ohio, included: Measurements of indoor air pollutants and perceived IAQ at different outside ventilation rates; Measurement of increased electricity demand; and Many hours of observing the building's HVAC system.
