Energy-conservation effectiveness of furnace-retrofit devices

Conference ·
OSTI ID:5594401
This paper presents a current account of potentially useful near-term technology for the modification, by retrofit, of existing gas-fired residential furnace installations to increase fuel utilization efficiency. Fuel input derate and automatic vent dampers represent two such approaches, with any efficiency improvement resulting from the impact of these retrofit technologies upon furnace design and operation and building structure characteristics. Results are presented for groups of field-tested single family residences, with furnace installations similarly modified, and also from individual homes. The paper also presents several case studies, with preliminary discussion of cause-and-effect relationships for the energy savings at the group or individual site level.
