An attempt is made to clarify some common misconceptions associated with the problem of acid precipitation. The major problem is that of inaccurate and subjective journalism, both in the press and television. Not only has the general public become confused, but politicians and other governmental officials are writing their preconceived ideas relative to the seriousness of the situation. Some researchers have reported effects of acid rain that have yet to be determined and understood or which are highly unlikely to occur even if rain acidity increases substantially. There are research areas that should be addressed. Then, based upon reliable research results, there no doubt should be some type of regulation insuring good quality of air and precipitation in North America.
