Improvement of gadolinia fuel cycle economics by isotopic enrichment of /sup 157/Gd

Conference · · Trans. Am. Nucl. Soc.; (United States)

Burnable absorbers are used in fuel cycle design for controlling excess reactivity and core power distributions. Gadolinia (Gd/sub 2/O/sub 3/) has been used for a number of years in both boiling water and pressurized water reactor fuel as a burnable absorber. However, gadolinia exhibits significant end-of-cycle (EOC) residual absorption that translates to an economic penalty. This paper presents the concept of using gadolinia enriched in the /sup 157/Gd isotope to reduce this residual and thereby improve the economics of gadolinia fuel cycles.
