The quark mixing matrix for two and three families is diagonalized. Weak eigenstates are defined in an unambiguous way based on the eigenvalues of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix. For the real 3{times}3 mixing matrix a geometrical interpretation of flavor mixing is given, and it is argued that in the complex case such an interpretation is not possible. Furthermore, if the third generation decouples, we get democratic mass matrices in terms of the weak eigenstates for the first two families. There are indications that the Cabibbo mixing is different in character from the mixings of the third generation with the other ones.
