In order to critically evaluate explosive vapor detection systems, a calibrated explosive vapor source is required. a prototype source has been developed and built, and it is currently being evaluated. This source was designed to be portable. The weight of the main unit is less than 20 pounds, and its size is comparable to a small briefcase. The design allows for easy interchange of explosive vapor sources. The prototype source is currently being evaluated for the generation of calibrated gas streams containing NG, EDDN, and TNT. In this paper the design and operational characteristics of the prototype unit are described. The possibility of extending this technology to other explosives are described.
