It is pointed out that gauge symmetries of gauge theories without matter fields in multiply connected spaces can be broken by nontrivial boundary conditions. An example of SU(3) gauge theory in flat {ital S}{sup 1}{times}{ital R}{sup 3} spacetime is examined. In particular, the symmetry-breaking pattern is determined in the one-loop approximation assuming that the vacuum is homogeneous in space. This symmetry-breaking pattern cannot be achieved by a Higgs field in the adjoint representation.
