L-italic/sub 2,3/-M-italic/sub 4,5/M/sub 4,5/ Auger-electron spectra of the metallic elements /sub 47/Ag to /sub 51/Sb: An analysis of the main and satellite structures

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev. B: Condens. Matter; (United States)

The L-italic/sub 2,3/-M-italic/sub 4,5/M/sub 4,5/ Auger-electron spectra of the metallic elements /sub 47/Ag to /sub 51/Sb have been measured. The spectra are analyzed within the framework of Hartree-Fock differential self-consistent-field (..delta..SCF) calculations in which correlation and relativistic energy shifts have been included, using j-italicX(h-italicy-italicj-italic coupling for the initial state and intermediate coupling for the final state. It is found that structure on the low-energy side of the L-italic/sub 3/-M-italic/sub 4,5/M/sub 4,5/ spectrum, previously interpreted as due to the L-italic/sub 3/M/sub 4,5/-M-italic/sub 4,5/M/sub 4,/ /sub 5/M/sub 4,5/ multiple-hole excitations following the L-italic/sub 1/-L-italic/sub 3/M/sub 4,5/ Coster-Kronig decay process, is also present in the L-italic/sub 2/-M-italic/sub 4,5/M/sub 4,5/ spectrum. Electron energy-loss spectroscopy data show that the structure in fact corresponds to plasmon satellites. The L-italic/sub 3/M/sub 4,5/-M-italic/sub 4,5andand//sub M-italic//sub >4/, /sub 5/M/sub 4,5/ satellites are revealed in /sub 47/Ag and /sub 48/Cd by an anomalous value of the intensity ratio of the L-italic/sub 3/-M-italic/sub 4,5/M/sub 4,5/ and L-italic/sub 2/-M-italic/sub 4,5/M/sub 4,5/ groups. The L-italic/sub 2,3/ level widths of the elements /sub 47/Ag to /sub 51/Sb are determined from a simulation of the experimental spectra using our theoretical results.
