The oil fields first intelligent rod-pumping system, using microprocessors and adaptive electronic controls, has been developed by National Production Systems, unit of National Supply Company. The system provides a degree of control over rod-pumping never before possible to optimize well production and energy efficiency. Advantages cited for the new system, compared to conventional rod lift approaches, include reduced size of pumping unit; longer stroke length - up to 40 ft; variable stroke length changes in well flow to avoid pump-off and fluid pound conditions; reduced cycle rate for reduced wear; minimizing of dynamic loading by equalizing speed of downstroke and upstroke and smoothing of stroke reversals; lowering of electric power consumption by 10 to 30%; and diagnostic capabilities built into unit - complete with dynomometer data available for local readout or remote transmission.
