Experiments have been conducted to investigate the suitability of scanning photoacoustic microscopy for nondestructive evaluation of reaction-bonded silicon-nitride turbine hardware. Results for complex-shaped turbine stator vanes indicate that surface-crack detection of the order of tens of microns is possible. The technique shows potential as a variable-depth probe for subsurface defects as well as a high-resolution surface-defect probe.
