The structure and crystallization of Fe/sub 80/B/sub 20/ metallic glasses produced with different methods are studied by Moessbauer spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, DSC, and x-ray diffraction. The crystallization kinetics is determined by isothermal DSC using Johnson-Mehl-Avrami analysis, and by nonisothermal DSC using Kissinger method. These results are compared with quantitative phase analysis of Moessbauer spectra near surface versus bulk structure and crystallization under inert atmosphere and vacuum are compared by conversion electron Moessbauer spectroscopy, CEMS. The results indicate Fe/sub 3/B-type short range order in the as quenched glass. Upon heating, a eutectic type phase separation occurs with no substantial change in the chemical composition of the amorphous phase.
