Quark indistinguishability and the structure functions of the nucleon in a field-theoretic quark model

Journal Article · · Phys. Rev., D; (United States)
We consider here a specific mechanism for the deep-inelastic electron-nucleon scattering in a field-theoretic quark model introduced earlier. This process is assumed to be equivalent to the electron and proton going over to the electron and a system of three free quarks as a quantum-mechanical transition. The above amplitude is expected to yield the valence contribution to the structure function which is estimated. It is noticed that the wave function generating the structure function for the nucleon with incoherent scattering and the structure function generated in the above quantum-mechanical transition are not equivalent when SU(6) -symmetry breaking is included, which arises due to the indistinguishability of quarks of the hadron and to kinematic effects arising from bound quarks becoming ''free.'' Similar exchange effects are also noticed in the calculation of the charge radius of the nucleon. The differences in these transitions as opposed to conventional quark-parton models are illustrated with a simple wave function with SU(6) -symmetry breaking.
