The authors discuss various phenomena that are associated with enhanced recovery of oil. These include the flow of two or three immiscible phases in porous media, hydrodynamic dispersion in one and two phase flow in porous media, and miscible displacement processes and the associated hydrodynamic stability problem of such processes in porous media. The authors show that a unified approach to all these problems can be developed. The authors present a method for simulating miscible displacement processes which takes into account the effect of viscosity contrast, dispersion and permeability heterogeneities. The implications for enhanced recovery of oil are discussed.
