NRC perspectives on alternative disposal methods

Conference · · Trans. Am. Nucl. Soc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5586396
The US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) published in December 1986 its final technical position statement entitled Licensing of Alternative Methods of Disposal for Low-Level Radioactive Waste. The presentation discusses the position statement. Briefly, the results are summarized of a 3-yr study conducted by NRC staff with contractor assistance from the US Army Corps of Engineers. The position also identifies those techniques currently being considered as alternative disposal options to shallow land burial and then evaluates each of the options for compatibility with 10CFR61, Licensing Requirements for Land Disposal of Radioactive Waste. More specifically, each alternative was examined in terms of Subpart D of part 61, Technical Requirements for Land Disposal of Radioactive Waste. The alternatives identified as disposal options are above ground vaults, below ground vaults, augured holes, earth-mounded concrete bunkers, and mined cavities. After examining the technical requirements of part 61, the NRC concluded that each of these alternatives is licensable under 10CFR61. The presentation discusses, in varying levels of detail, all the above-mentioned items. It also discusses at some length, NRC's current and future strategy on alternative disposal options.
