Union Oil Co. of California has started construction of a full-size 10,000 bpd shale oil retorting module on the southeastern rim of Colorado's Piceance basin. This plant and associated crude shale oil upgrading facilities are scheduled to start producing in 1983. Mine-run shale oil will be supplied from a 12,500-short tons/day room-and-pillar development in the Mahogany Zone, containing approximately 35 gal/short tons of recoverable shale oil. The goal is a 50,000 bpd commercial operation consisting of 4 additional mines and retorting modules along with related facilities, possibly as early as 1988. The commercial-size processing package is located on a 5-acre bench carved and graded from the North Canyon Bluff on the East Fork of Parachute Creek. The plant will discharge spent shale through an enclosed chute to the East Fork Valley floor, where the shale will be distributed and revegetated. The 10,000 bpd raw shale oil upgrading plant will produce a liquid syncrude essentially free of sulfur, nitrogen, and residuals.
