This description of Version 5 of the National Coal Model emphasizes the representation of the coal and electric utility industries employed in the model. It also provides an explicit statement of the linear programming formulation of the NCM and the row and column structure of the NCM. The description is addressed to the researcher trained in economics, mathematical modeling, or operations research. It is intended to provide an understanding of the economic and engineering assumptions underlying the structure of the model and the data.
