Medium energy proton and helium-3 capture in light nuclei
Since our initial report of unexpectedly strong capture of 40 and 80 MeV protons to highly excited states in /sup 12/C, /sup 13/N, and /sup 28/Si, the Ohio State: Indiana University Cyclotron collaboration has continued to investigate the characteristics of medium energy radiative capture reactions. Among these are the existence of 2h-bar..omega.. giant resonances built on 1h-bar..omega.. excited states, as well as 3h-bar..omega.. resonances on 2h-bar..omega.. states; and the striking similarities of angular distributions and analyzing powers for similar single-particle transitions in closed-subshell and neighboring closed-subshell-plus-one-proton nuclei. We have also been impressed with the generally good description of the ..gamma../sub 0/ and ..gamma../sub 1/ observations provided by a direct-semi-direct reaction picture toward the higher energies investigated. Recently, however, we have observed an anomalously strong capture in /sup 7/Be to a state which appears to require a multi-step process to populate. Radiative capture of /sup 3/He particles has also been studied by our group over the past few months. Early results for captures into /sup 12/C and /sup 16/O show significantly different populations of final states than in the same nuclei excited by proton capture. Another reaction, /sup 12/C(/sup 3/He,..gamma..)/sup 15/O, appears to populate the same set of states observed in /sup 12/C(/sup 6/Li,t)/sup 15/O. Selectivity for 3-particle configurations is suggested in these cases.
