An apparatus is described for cleaning a flow of particulate-laden gas, which consists of: (a) a housing having a gas inlet for receiving particulate-laden gas and a gas outlet for discharging clean gas, the housing having an inner wall forming a passageway axially extending from the gas inlet to the gas outlet to permit a flow of gas therethrough; (b) electrode means suspended axially in the passageway of the housing; (c) voltage means electrically connected to the electrode means of the housing at a voltage differential sufficient to cause a corona discharge at the charging element for charging particulate located in the charging chamber and sufficient to subject particulate located in the collecting chamber to an electrostatic force, whereby the particulate is forced outwardly towards the housing; (d) support means for supporting the electrode means in the housing; (e) vortex means within the passageway of the housing intermediate of the collecting chamber and the gas inlet for imparting a rotating motion to the gas flow, whereby particulate is forced outwardly toward the inner wall; (f) scavenge means within the passageway of the housing for separating particulate and agglomerated masses of particulate from the gas flow; (g) particulate removing means for removing particulate collected on the inside of the porous inner wall of the housing.
