In an attempt to help designers understand the key aspects and factors that may determine the response and performance of offshore platforms during earthquakes, Woodward-Clyde Consultants reviews the present knowledge of the inelastic response of one class of platforms - the steel, tubular-membered, truss-framed structures supported by tubular piles and conductors. A significant background of competent dynamic and static elastic analyses and simple-system elastic-inelastic analyses is available on which to base projections of inelastic performance, although actual experience with this class of platform system subjected to severe ground motions is limited. From the experience and knowledge existing, however, designers can develop an offshore platform having an earthquake resistance that equals or exceeds that of comparable conventional onshore structures.
