Momentum-space approach to pion-nucleus scattering above the Delta resonance

Conference · · AIP Conf. Proc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5580597
The pion-nucleus interaction is investigated in the energy region 300--500 MeV. The qualitative features of the interaction, including the isospin dependence of the two-body amplitude and the increasing penetrability of the pion, are reviewed. The convergence of multiple scattering theory in this energy range is discussed. The recent data for pion single-charge exchange to the isobaric analogue state is compared to the theoretical results produced by a microscopic, momentum-space, isospin invariant optical potential. The optical potential utilizes fully relativistic kinematics and the fermi integration is performed exactly. A new model for the pion-nucleon D- and F-wave channels is necessary in order to extend this approach to the optical potential to higher energies. This model, a 'doorway resonance' model, is reviewed. Plans for future work is outlined.
