Core barrel plug

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5579736
A nuclear reactor is described having a core barrel and a plug for preventing flow through a port in the core barrel. The plug consists of: a substantially cylindrical body formed with a cylindrical portion and a flange and defining a tapered leading open end, the body defining a bore therein extending from the open end to the flange with the bore having a smaller diameter near the open end than near the flange, the cylindrical portion being formed with longitudinal slots extending from the open end toward the flange and extending entirely through its thickness; an end plug attached to the flange and having a second bore therethrough and holes extending from the second bore to the outside of the end plug; a mandrel slidably disposed and captured in the body and having an extension slidably disposed through the second bore with the extension having a channel therethrough for allowing a fluid to pass through the channel and into a space defined between the mandrel and the end plug for moving the mandrel toward the open end of the body when the fluid is introduced into the space thereby causing the cylindrical portion to be expanded, the extension allowing the fluid to pass into the holes when the mandrel is in the expanded and locked position thereby venting the fluid and preventing overexpansion of the plug; and locking means disposed on the mandrel for locking the mandrel in the expanded position.
