Atmospheric transport and diffusion on the regional scale

Journal Article · · J. Great Lakes Res.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5579134
After a historical review of atmospheric transport and diffusion studies, the idea of a surface mixed layer is introduced, and some views on spatial and temporal variability of this mixed layer are given. The classical diffusion equations are described, and their applicability to the regional scale is discussed. Finally, the method of trajectory analysis is reviewed. It is argued that the predictions given by the diffusion equations and by trajectory analyses may be wildly in error on individual occasions. However, climatological predictions (e.g., of frequency distributions of air pollution concentrations) may be suitable for many engineering purposes.
