Physical decommissioning of the Shippingport atomic power station

Conference · · Trans. Am. Nucl. Soc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5578431
The Shippingport Atomic Power Station (SAPS) consists of the nuclear steam supply system and associated radioactive waste processing systems, which are owned by the US Dept. of Energy (USDOE), and the turbine generator and balance of plant, which are owned by the Duquesne Light Co. The station is located at Shippingport, Pennsylvania, on 7 acres of land leased by USDOE from the Duquesne Light Co. The Shippingport Station Decommissioning Project (SSDP) is being managed by the General Electric Co. and its integrated subcontractor, Morrison Knudsen-Ferguson Co., for the USDOE. The objectives of the SSDP are to: (1) demonstrate the safe and cost-effective dismantlement of a large-scale nuclear power plant; (2) provide useful data for future decommissioning projects; and (3) maintain the SAPS in a radiologically safe condition. This paper presents the current status of the physical decommissioning work, which started Sept. 1985. The controlling path and parallel work activities are described along with the project's cost and schedule status through December 31, 1986.
