Thin LiPb/Be helium-cooled blanket for MINIMARS: neutronic analysis

Conference · · Trans. Am. Nucl. Soc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:5577561
This work presents a thin blanket design for the commercial tandem mirror reactor MINIMARS using the reactor parameters to date. Future studies may call for minor changes in the parameters to incorporate the idea of central cell wall stabilization and to achieve the inherent safety goal. Although the study was carried out for a 17Li-83Pb system, the trends observed here hold true for other breeding materials. Recent studies for minimizing blanket thickness used idealized blankets with semicontinuously varying composition and no allowance for cooling. Here we present a realistic thin blanket design that satisfies all requirements of neutronics, safety, thermal-hydraulics, and mechanical design.
