Ionization control for automotive ignition system

Patent ·
OSTI ID:5577426
This paper describes an internal combustion engine having N spark plugs having ionization times that are controllable by the duration of current dwell in at least one ignition coil, a method of controlling the ionization time of the spark plugs. It comprises: measuring the ionization times (Tl-Tn) of the spark plugs; providing a reference ionization time; using the measured ionization times and the reference ionization time to develop an error signal that is representative of an undesired deviation from the reference ionization time; and adjusting the duration of the current dwell time in the ignition coil so as to change ionization time and reduce the size of the error signal.
