Title: Fuel injection apparatus

Abstract

A fuel injection apparatus is described for supplying fuel from a fuel tank to at least one combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine, comprising: an injector housing defining therein a pressure cylinder bore, an injection cylinder bore and a timing cylinder bore connected in series with the pressure cylinder bore; a pressure plunger, fitted in the pressure cylinder bore and having one end defining, in the pressure cylinder bore, a pressure pump chamber communicating with the injection cylinder bore and the timing cylinder bore; first fuel supply means for supplying fuel from the fuel tank to the pressure pump chamber; pressurizing means for reciprocating the pressure plunger in the pressure cylinder bore in synchronism with the engine operation so as to pressurize fuel in the pressure pump chamber; an injection plunger, having a diameter smaller than the pressure plunger, fitted in the injection cylinder bore and having two ends defining, in the injection cylinder bore, an injection pump chamber and a first communicating chamber communicating with the pressure pump chamber; second fuel supply means for adjusting the quantity of the fuel from the fuel tank in accordance with engine operation conditions so as to supply the adjusted fuel quantitymore » to the injection pump chamber; injection valve means for injecting the fuel into the fuel pump chamber toward a combustion chamber of the engine when the pressure in the pressure pump chamber is applied to the injection plunger through the first communicating chamber, and the fuel pressure in the injection pump chamber reaches a predetermined injection pressure.« less

  • This patent describes an apparatus for controlling the fuel injection timing of a fuel injection device for an internal combustion engine. The engine has a sensor for producing an electric signal indicating the fuel injection timing in response to the fuel pressure at the time of fuel supply and an adjusting means for adjusting the fuel injection timing of a fuel injection pump. The engine also includes a first output means responsive to at least the electric signal for generating a control signal applied to the adjusting means in order to carry out feedback control of the fuel injection timing.more » The apparatus comprises: a first means for generating a first signal relating to the rotational speed of the internal combustion engine to which fuel is supplied from the fuel injection pump; a second means for generating a second signal relating to the load on the internal combustion engine; a detecting means for detecting whether or not the electric signal is being produced by the sensor; a discriminating means responsive to the first and second signals and the output signals from the detecting means for discriminating whether or not the sensor is functioning properly; a second output means for generating a back-up control signal for controlling the fuel injection by open-loop control; a switch-over means for providing the back-up control signal to the adjusting means in place of the control signal in order to switch over the fuel injection timing control mode from feed-back control; and means for giving an indication when a sensor malfunction has been discriminated by the discriminating means.« less

  • An apparatus is described for controlling a fuel injection advance angle of a fuel injection pump having a hydraulic type timer with a solenoid valve connected with an injection advance angle adjusting member of the fuel injection pump. The apparatus consists of: a first means for generating a first signal showing a target injection advance angle for closed-loop control for the condition of operation of an internal combustion engine associated with the fuel injection pump; a second means for generating a feedback signal related to the actual injection advance angle; a third means responsive to the first signal and themore » feedback signal for producing a first control signal for controlling the solenoid valve so as to be in one state of opening or closing when the actual injection advance angle is substantially coincident with the desired target injection advance angle, and to be in the other state of opening or closing when they are not substantially coincident; means for generating a second signal showing the target injection advance angle for open-loop control according to the condition of operation of the internal combustion engine; means responsive to the second signal for generating a second control signal, which is a pulse signal having a duty cycle determined in accordance with the second signal, for controlling the average opening of the solenoid valve so as to obtain the optimum injection advance angle; a detecting means for detecting whether or not the feedback signal is in normal condition; and a signal changeover means which is responsive to the result detected by the detecting means and supplies the first control signal to the solenoid valve when the feedback signal is in normal condition and supplies the second control signal to the solenoid valve when the feedback signal is not in the normal condition.« less
